Heat Wave Drains São Paulo Water Reserves to 26.4% as Storms Cut Power for 160,000

  • Usable storage in the metropolitan system slipped from 26.5% to 26.4% on Dec. 27 under a red heat warning from Inmet.
  • Sabesp said output rose from about 66,000 L/s (Dec. 14–20) to 72,000 L/s on Dec. 24, with consumption up to 60% in some areas.
  • Strong afternoon storms put the city on flood alert and left more than 162,000 Enel customers without electricity around 5 p.m., with wind, lightning and hail reported.
  • Residents in higher and peripheral areas reported multi‑day water interruptions, including in Butantã, Embu das Artes, Osasco and parts of Guarulhos.
  • The state set up a crisis cabinet to track the rains, and the city began the Altas Temperaturas operation to assist vulnerable residents with water and fruit.
