Heat Wave and Violent Storms Hit Southern Brazil

Weather agencies warn a developing extratropical cyclone could bring extreme local rainfall and winds up to 100 km/h that will sustain hail and flooding risks over the next 48 to 72 hours.

Overview

  • Defesa Civil in Rio Grande do Sul updated its tally by Monday morning to 12,881 people affected and four injured after storms and large hail that began late last week.
  • Paraná authorities reported about 2,700 people affected and roughly 900 homes damaged, with the worst impacts in Clevelândia and Pinhão where roofs and vehicles were hit by egg‑sized hail.
  • The Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia issued a red 'great danger' alert for a heat wave across parts of the Southeast, Centre‑West and South, with temperatures about 5°C above normal and health risks in some interior areas.
  • Forecasts from state services and meteorologists predict an extratropical cyclone and associated front forming between Sept. 28–30 that could produce isolated totals above 200–270 mm in parts of Rio Grande do Sul and gusts to 90–100 km/h.
  • Thousands of homes, schools and public buildings have reported damage and emergency teams are mobilized across affected municipalities, tallies remain provisional and authorities say further increases in people affected and infrastructure losses are possible.
