Heart Disease and Cancer Lead Causes of Death in Berlin and Brandenburg in 2023

Over 75,000 deaths were recorded in the two regions last year, with cardiovascular diseases and cancer accounting for the majority.

In Brandenburg, 36,622 people died in 2023, with an average age of 79 years at death.
Cardiovascular diseases were the leading cause of death in Brandenburg, responsible for 35.7% of fatalities (13,063 people), with an average death age of 82.1 years.
Cancer was the second most common cause of death in Brandenburg, claiming 8,435 lives, with lung and bronchial cancers making up about 20% of these cases.
In Berlin, 38,473 deaths were recorded in 2023, with an average age at death of 78.2 years; cardiovascular diseases also topped the list, causing nearly 31% of deaths.
Other significant causes of death in both regions included respiratory diseases and external factors such as accidents and self-harm, which accounted for hundreds of fatalities.
