Health Unions Announce Indefinite Tuesday Strike From Jan. 27 as Spain Prepares for Four-Day Doctors’ Walkout

The escalation follows stalled negotiations over a contested Estatuto Marco, with unions alleging parallel talks by the Health Ministry.

Overview

  • Doctors’ unions CESM and SMA confirmed a national strike for December 9–12 after unanimously rejecting what they called the ministry’s final offer.
  • Negotiating-table unions SATSE-FSES, CCOO, UGT, CSIF and CIG-Saúde set an indefinite strike to occur every Tuesday from January 27 across the national health system.
  • Castilla-La Mancha published minimum-service rules mandating 100% staffing for emergencies, critical care, dialysis, oncologic radiotherapy, transplant coordination and urgent functions, with 25% cover in primary care and 33% in hospital services.
  • Murcia detailed minimum services to fully preserve urgent and non-deferrable care, including full activity for oncology consultations, radiotherapy, day-hospital treatments and pharmacy for non-deferrable therapies.
  • The Andalusian medical union contested the regional minimum-services plan, while Aragón’s health minister warned the December stoppage will harm recent gains on surgical waiting lists.
