Health Secretary Orders NHS’ First National Review of LGBT+ Health Inequalities

The six-month inquiry led by Dr Michael Brady will gather evidence through August ahead of a December report.

Overview

  • Health Secretary Wes Streeting commissioned the review after surveys revealed that LGBT+ patients face systemic barriers, poorer experiences and worse health outcomes.
  • The inquiry will analyse data across mental health, sexual and reproductive health, HIV prevention, perinatal and primary care, cancer screening, and substance misuse services.
  • Academics, clinicians, public health professionals and community organisations are invited to submit published and unpublished evidence by August 31 to inform the findings.
  • The review’s scope explicitly excludes NHS gender services for children and adults and separate social care services, which are covered by other ongoing reviews.
  • Dr Michael Brady will present final recommendations to the Department of Health and Social Care in December 2025 to guide improvements in equitable NHS care for LGBT+ communities.
