Health Canada Approves Moderna's Updated COVID-19 Vaccine

The new SpikeVAX targets the KP.2 variant as provinces prepare for fall vaccination campaigns.

Health Canada has authorized Moderna's SpikeVAX vaccine, reformulated to target the KP.2 subvariant of Omicron.
Provinces and territories have been instructed to withdraw and destroy older XBB.1.5 vaccine doses to make way for the new supply.
The KP.3.1.1 variant, closely related to KP.2, currently accounts for 52% of COVID-19 infections in Canada.
The National Advisory Committee on Immunization strongly recommends the updated vaccine for high-risk groups, including seniors and those with underlying conditions.
Pfizer and Novavax are still awaiting Health Canada approval for their updated COVID-19 vaccines.
