Healey Names Worcester Overpass Bob Cousy Pass

The dedication cements Cousy’s long ties to Worcester by adding a named I-290 overpass to existing campus and city tributes.

Overview

  • Gov. Maura Healey announced the naming at a ceremony at the College of the Holy Cross on Friday, formally dedicating the I-290 overpass that spans Southbridge Street as Bob Cousy Pass.
  • Ninety-seven-year-old Bob Cousy attended the event and thanked Healey, calling the honor personal and joking about already having statues and now a pass.
  • The overpass naming follows earlier local tributes, including a 7-foot Holy Cross statue unveiled in 2008, a statue at the DCU Center in 2021, and the school's Bob Cousy Court dedicated in February.
  • Cousy’s record includes 13 seasons with the Boston Celtics (1950–63), six NBA titles, a 1957 MVP award, eight straight seasons leading the league in assists, plus roles in founding the players’ union and public anti-racism stances.
  • The visible, everyday landmark will keep Cousy’s legacy in public view for commuters and visitors and continues a recent pattern by Massachusetts leaders of using infrastructure to honor local sports figures.
