Headteacher Who Attacked Deputy With Spanner Breaks Silence on Prison Term

His first public account focuses on remorse for the assault.

Overview

  • Dr Anthony John Felton, 54, has written in the prisoners’ newspaper Inside Time expressing deep shame and regret over attacking deputy head Richard Pyke.
  • He was sentenced at Swansea Crown Court to two years and four months for attempted grievous bodily harm with intent after the March 5, 2025 attack at St Joseph’s in Port Talbot.
  • CCTV presented in court showed Felton striking Mr Pyke from behind with a heavy spanner, and the judge said the violence was driven by “overwhelming sexual jealousy.”
  • Felton was released early under the Home Office Detention Curfew Scheme with electronic tagging after time in HMP Swansea, where he says he was initially on suicide watch and feared violence.
  • He says he now works for a charity, remains suspended from teaching, is subject to an indefinite restraining order barring contact with Mr Pyke, and the school is advertising his former post while the deputy continues to teach.
