Head of the Charles Opens Friday With Revamped Fan Zones and Live Tracking Upgrades

Health officials cleared the race course after algae concerns, setting up a three-day showcase of new spectator features.

Overview

  • Nearly 12,000 athletes from close to 30 countries will compete across 74 events as hundreds of thousands of spectators line the Charles River.
  • Reunion Village has been reimagined as the Riverbender with music and lounge areas, more than 30 local food vendors, a family sports zone, and the new FALS Bar at Herter Park.
  • Organizers added viewing screens at Weeks, Weld, and the finish, introduced telemetry boat tracking, upgraded the app and webcast to six concurrent views, and will stream from in-boat cameras with audio.
  • Parking is extremely limited, public transit is strongly advised, and Cambridge will close parts of Memorial Drive and nearby streets on Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.; options include Harvard Stadium and the Alewife garage.
  • Racing begins 7:45 a.m. Friday at the BU DeWolfe Boathouse with masters events and runs through full-day sessions this weekend to the Herter Park finish, with popular viewing at the challenging Weeks Footbridge turn.
