HBO Rules Out Annual Release for Harry Potter Series
The network says it will not commit to a 2027 Season 2 premiere and will manage the show on a season-by-season basis to allow for complex production needs.
Overview
- HBO has said it will not keep a yearly release cadence for the multi-season Harry Potter adaptation and declined to commit to a Season 2 premiere in 2027, calling timing a season-by-season decision.
- The first season, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is scheduled to launch on HBO and HBO Max on December 25, 2026.
- Warner Bros. and HBO officially greenlit Season 2 in May and are staffing and casting the Chamber of Secrets adaptation with work planned to begin in the fall.
- Casting for Season 2 is advancing with Kit Harington replacing Nicholas Hoult as Gilderoy Lockhart and announcements including Bonnie Hill, Lenny Rush, Billy Barratt, Rafe Spall, Molly Hewitt Richards, and Jasper Ambrose.
- Tabloid reports say some Season 2 scripts were discarded and rewritten which could shift filming, but HBO has not confirmed those claims and says the series’ large sets, expanded episode counts, and the need to keep young leads age-appropriate are the main drivers of its flexible schedule.
