HBO Max Unveils ‘Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires’ Trailer at San Diego Comic-Con

Reimagining Batman’s origin in the Aztec Empire with new versions of his rogues’ gallery, the film will debut digitally on September 19, 2025.

  • HBO Max premiered the first trailer at San Diego Comic-Con, offering an early look at the film’s animation style and Mesoamerican setting.
  • The story follows Yohualli Coatl, a young noble whose father is slain by Spanish conquistadors, driving him to train under the bat god Tzinacan and warn King Moctezuma.
  • Raymond Cruz is cast as the Joker and the trailer teases Jaguar Woman, Forest Ivy and a Hernán Cortés-inspired Two-Face among the reimagined villains.
  • Juan Meza-León, known for his work on the Harley Quinn animated series, co-wrote and directs the production in partnership with Warner Bros. Animation, Particular Crowd, Anima and Chatrone.
  • DC confirms a digital release on September 19, marking its second international cultural reinterpretation of Batman following 2018’s Batman Ninja.
