Hazardous Magnetic Ball Kits Sold on Walmart.com Recalled
Consumer Product Safety Commission warns of potential health risks if magnets are swallowed, citing previous hospitalizations and deaths.
- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled a toy sold on Walmart.com that contains small, powerful magnetic balls due to the potential hazard they pose if swallowed by children.
- The toy, named the Relax 5mm Science Kit, contains 216 multicolored magnetic balls that exceed federal standards for magnetic strength.
- If ingested, the magnets could clump together or attach to other metal objects, leading to potential perforations, twisting, blockage of the intestines, infection, blood poisoning, and even death.
- Between 2017 and 2021, an estimated 2,400 cases of magnet ingestion were treated in hospital emergency rooms, and seven deaths related to the ingestion of hazardous magnets have been reported.
- The kits were sold by Joybuy Marketplace Express, a unit of Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com, and as of the recall announcement, the kits were no longer visible on Walmart.com.
