Hawk Hill Reopens After 15-Year Overhaul With New Access, Restored Military Sites

The upgrade finishes a three-phase renovation prioritizing accessibility, safety improvements, preservation of coastal defense features.

Overview

  • The final hilltop phase finished in late 2025, with reopening celebrations in mid-December after a 43-day government shutdown delay.
  • New features include a pedestrian bridge to the former radar platform, a rehabilitated World War I–era Battery Commander Station in original camouflage, upgraded overlooks, guardrails, curbs and interpretive signage.
  • The project totaled about $7 million, including $3.5 million for the final phase, funded by National Park Service Centennial Act dollars, matched Conservancy funds, state contributions and private donations.
  • Work since 2011 delivered an accessible summit route, the rebuilt Tunnel Loop Trail through wartime structures, vault toilets, seating and bike racks.
  • Hawk Hill remains free and open 24/7, continuing as a Golden Gate Raptor Observatory site where volunteers count as many as roughly 18,000 migrating raptors each fall.
