Hawick Fire Prompts Evacuations in San Diego's East County

Crews battling a 20-acre brush fire that is spreading dangerously have opened an evacuation center at a Walmart in El Cajon.

  • The fire ignited June 19 near the 14000 block of Hawick Drive in Lakeside, less than 10 miles south of the Monte Fire.
  • By 3:45 p.m. the blaze had grown from an initial 5 acres to about 20 acres with flames advancing at a dangerous rate, Cal Fire San Diego reported.
  • Mandatory evacuation orders cover roads including Rios Canyon Road, Calle de Ernesto and Legacy Court, and warnings extend south of Interstate 8 from Flinn Springs toward La Cresta.
  • Displaced residents are sheltering at an evacuation center established at the Walmart at 13487 Camino Canada in El Cajon.
  • Cal Fire San Diego and San Diego County sheriff’s deputies are monitoring weather and terrain conditions as they work to contain the fire.
