Hausrotschwanz Named 2025 Bird of the Year

The Hausrotschwanz, a resilient city-dwelling songbird, wins a public vote for its ecological significance.

The Hausrotschwanz won with about 30% of votes in an online poll conducted by the Naturschutzbund Deutschland (Nabu) and the Bavarian Conservation Association (LBV).
The competition drew participation from over 143,000 people, marking the highest engagement in the history of the bird of the year vote.
Second place went to the Waldohreule, followed by the Schwarzspecht, Schwarzstorch, and Kranich, highlighting diverse ecological concerns.
The Hausrotschwanz, known for nesting in urban environments, faces challenges due to reduced nesting sites and declining insect populations.
Since 2021, the Bird of the Year has been chosen through a public vote, each candidate representing critical conservation issues.
