Hate Crime Rises in England and Wales for First Time in Three Years as Religious Offences Hit Record

Metropolitan Police recording changes obscure the true count of antisemitic offences, with a Manchester synagogue attack intensifying security fears.

Overview

  • Home Office data show overall police-recorded hate crime rose 2% to 115,990 in the year to March 2025 when excluding the Metropolitan Police, ending a three-year decline.
  • Religiously motivated offences reached a record 7,164, and anti-Muslim crimes increased about 19% to 3,199, with a clear spike following the Southport murders and ensuing riots in August 2024.
  • Race hate crimes climbed 6% year on year to 82,490, while offences related to sexual orientation, disability and transgender identity decreased.
  • Anti-Jewish offences recorded by forces outside London fell 18% to 1,715, yet comparisons are constrained because the Met changed recording systems and previously accounted for about 40% of such cases.
  • Following last week’s terrorist attack outside a Manchester synagogue, police increased patrols at places of worship and the government pledged £50m for security, as CST and Tell Mama reported persistently high incident levels this year.
