Overview

  • About 35,000 runners from more than 150 countries took part in Sydney’s first year as the seventh Abbott World Marathon Major.
  • Sifan Hassan won the women’s race in 2:18:22 for a course record, while Hailemaryam Kiros set a men’s course mark of 2:06:06 that also stands as the fastest marathon ever run in Australia.
  • Headline attraction Eliud Kipchoge finished ninth after dropping from the lead pack near the 31–32km mark.
  • Marcel Hug (1:27:15) and Susannah Scaroni set wheelchair records in the men’s and women’s divisions respectively.
  • The scenic but hilly route over the Harbour Bridge and past Mrs Macquarie’s Chair required major road closures and special transport measures, with officials forecasting a tourism boost estimated at $73 million in coming years.
