Hassan, Kiros Shatter Course Marks as Sydney Debuts as Seventh World Marathon Major

Overview

  • Sifan Hassan won the women’s race in 2:18:22, lowering the course record by nearly three minutes and finishing 34 seconds ahead of Brigid Kosgei.
  • Hailemaryam Kiros took the men’s title in 2:06:06, a course record and the fastest marathon ever run on Australian soil, edging Addisu Gobena by 10 seconds.
  • Eliud Kipchoge, the headline attraction, finished ninth in 2:08:31 after dropping from the lead pack near the 31–32km mark.
  • Marcel Hug set a men’s wheelchair course record in 1:27:15 and Susannah Scaroni won the women’s wheelchair race in 1:45:52, both comfortably clear of their fields.
  • About 35,000 runners from more than 150 countries took on the hilly route from North Sydney over the Harbour Bridge to a Sydney Opera House finish under extensive road closures and public transport measures.
