Haryana Sends DGP Shatrujeet Kapur on Leave in IPS Officer’s Death Probe

The step reflects mounting pressure over caste-bias allegations during a funeral standoff.

Overview

  • IPS officer Y Puran Kumar allegedly died by suicide on October 7, and an eight-page note attributed to him accuses eight senior officers, including DGP Shatrujeet Kapur and Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya, of caste-based discrimination and harassment.
  • Widow and IAS officer Amneet P Kumar has refused consent for autopsy or cremation until strong action, including arrests, is taken against those named, leaving the body in a mortuary eight days later.
  • Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya has been removed from his post, Kapur has been placed on leave, and Om Parkash Singh has been given additional charge as Director General of Police.
  • Chandigarh Police have issued a notice to the widow to submit the officer’s laptop to the SIT, which is reportedly where the suicide note was drafted and saved.
  • Rahul Gandhi met the family and called for immediate action and arrests, while government events were postponed and the Prime Minister’s planned Sonipat visit was canceled.
