Haryana Pledges Jobs for One Member of Each of 121 1984 Riot Victim Families

The pledge comes alongside a Sirsa drug-control review triggered by a reported youth death.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini announced in the Assembly that one eligible member from each of the 121 affected families will receive priority placement in a government post.
  • Families have been asked to submit a mutually agreed nominee through their district Deputy Commissioner to the Chief Secretary, with detailed implementation instructions to follow.
  • Citing official data, the government said 121 people were killed and 58 injured in Haryana in 1984, when 20 gurdwaras, 221 houses, 154 shops, 57 factories, three rail coaches and 85 vehicles were set ablaze.
  • Punjab BJP leaders publicly welcomed the move, while some outlets reported analysts view the announcement as a BJP outreach toward Punjab ahead of the 2027 state elections.
  • Separately, Saini ordered a reassessment of 173 Sirsa villages labeled drug-free and shifted the local SHO to police lines after a report of a drug-related death, reiterating steps such as a Special Task Force and 162 de-addiction centres.
