Haryana Fugitive Mainpal Dhilla Returned to India From Cambodia After Seven Years

Indian authorities used Interpol channels to secure his handover from Cambodia.

  • The CBI said a Haryana Police team repatriated Dhilla from Phnom Penh on Tuesday, with the announcement made on Wednesday.
  • Dhilla was serving a life sentence after a 2013 conviction for murder, attempted murder, illegal firearms use and criminal conspiracy based on a 2007 FIR in Sadar Bahadurgarh, Jhajjar.
  • He failed to return from six weeks’ parole on August 29, 2018 from Hisar Central Jail and later travelled on a fraudulent passport under the alias Sonu Kumar.
  • An Interpol Red Notice was published on November 6, 2024, investigators traced his movement from Thailand to Cambodia through NCB Bangkok, and CBI alerted NCB Phnom Penh.
  • India requested a provisional arrest on March 26, 2025, Cambodian authorities confirmed his arrest on July 24 and later approved the handover, with CBI coordinating via its BHARATPOL platform that has helped return over 100 fugitives in recent years.
