Harvests Jump in Hessen and Schleswig-Holstein on Expanded Winter Wheat

Quality downgrades alongside low prices are pushing arable farms into losses.

Overview

  • Hessen farmers brought in about 1.963 million tonnes of grain, roughly a quarter more than 2024, with rapeseed up to 202,700 tonnes for a gain of just over 12 percent.
  • Average grain yields in Hessen reached a little over 71 decitonnes per hectare, more than 10 decitonnes above last year, helped by a larger winter‑wheat area of 149,700 hectares (+19,600).
  • Schleswig‑Holstein harvested around 2.4 million tonnes of grain and rapeseed, up 391,000 tonnes year on year, with winter grain near 2.2 million tonnes for a 24 percent increase.
  • July–August rains reduced wheat quality in the north, leaving more feed grain on farms and eroding returns, according to state officials and farm groups.
  • Producers report severe price pressure, with estimated losses exceeding €400 per hectare at €170 per tonne wheat, prompting storage‑and‑staggered sales strategies and renewed advocacy for resilient breeding and plant‑protection innovations.
