Harvest Supermoon Peaks Oct. 6–7, First of Three This Fall

Its close pass will make the disk appear up to 14% larger, about 30% brighter than an average full moon.

Overview

  • The full phase occurs at 11:47 p.m. EDT on Monday, Oct. 6 (03:47 UTC on Oct. 7).
  • At perigee the moon will be about 224,599 miles from Earth, creating the modest apparent size and brightness boost reported by astronomical agencies.
  • Best viewing is at local moonrise on Tuesday, Oct. 7, with New York City’s moonrise around 6:36 p.m. for a striking low-horizon view.
  • The Draconid meteor shower follows close behind, though the bright moonlight is expected to wash out many of the fainter meteors.
  • In South Asia the night coincides with Sharad Purnima, a culturally significant full-moon observance in the Hindu calendar.
