Harvard Team Finds Possible Remains of Interstellar Object in Pacific

  • Harvard astronomer Abraham “Avi” Loeb and his team recovered 50 microscropic metal spheres that may have come from beyond our solar system.
  • The spheres, totaling 35 milligrams, were found along the path of the first known interstellar meteor, IM1, which fell to Earth in 2014.
  • Loeb suggests there is a chance IM1 was not a naturally-occurring space rock, but wreckage from an interstellar alien probe.
  • The team used a giant magnet to collect the spheres from the ocean floor and will analyze them to determine their elemental and isotopic composition.
  • Loeb's team concluded a two-week search for remains of the interstellar object and found promising material that could shed light on the object's origins.
