Hartford Line Disruptions Grow as Amtrak Scrubs Trains and Schedules Bus Replacements for Weekend Work

Equipment shortages are forcing bus substitutions now, with upcoming construction set to expand replacements this weekend.

Beginning Tuesday, April 22, 2025 through Oct. 31, 2025, select weekday CTrail Hartford Line and Amtrak trains will operate on a modified schedule, with some trains replaced by bus service. Train fares will be effective on the substitute buses. Passengers will be required to purchase a CTrail or Amtrak ticket to board the substitute buses. Bus departure times may be earlier than regular train departure times at stations. Buses will stop at all stations listed below and passengers will be directed to the bus pick up and drop off location by signage on the platform:.... Hartford.. Windsor.. Windsor Locks.. Springfield, MA....Passengers are encouraged to visit HartfordLine.com or Amtrak.com for the latest service information. These changes are being implemented to allow safe and efficient progress on the new Windsor Locks Station Project and new interlockings and upgrades to grade crossings to enhance safety, increase capacity, and improve train speed and reliability.   • Amtrak confirmed cancellations on Monday and Tuesday, including Hartford Line Trains 474, 417 and Valley Flyer 478 on Monday, with Trains 425 and 471 canceled both days.
  • The railroad is rebooking passengers and operating buses that stop at all scheduled stations in place of the canceled trains.
  • Valley Flyer service has been hit repeatedly, with Train 478 canceled Monday and Trains 488 and 499 scrubbed over the prior weekend due to equipment unavailability.
  • CTrail and Amtrak say construction from Nov. 14–17 will replace most service with buses, including all Hartford–Springfield trains on Saturday and Sunday and specific Amtrak trips Friday and Monday.
  • Riders report persistent reliability issues on the shared corridor between New Haven and Springfield, with some blaming congestion from joint Amtrak and CTrail operations.
