Hartford Bakery Recalls 883 Loaves After Packaging Error Leaves Hazelnuts Undeclared

Pulled from shelves in 12 states, the recalled bread is being refunded to consumers pending Hartford Bakery’s investigation of the packaging error.

Overview

  • Hartford Bakery initiated the voluntary recall on July 10 after discovering visible hazelnuts in six production lots of its Lewis Bake Shop Artisan Style 1/2 Loaf that had been packaged without declaring the allergen.
  • The FDA announced the recall on July 11, warning that undeclared hazelnuts pose life-threatening risks for individuals with nut allergies.
  • Affected products are identified by lot codes T10 174010206, T10 174010306, T10 174010406, T10 174020206, T10 174020306 and T10 174020406 with UPC 24126018152 and an expiration date of July 13, 2025.
  • Approximately 883 loaves sold at Walmart and Kroger in Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Arkansas, Missouri, Alabama and Mississippi have been removed from shelves and consumers are urged to return them for a full refund.
  • No serious illnesses have been reported, though one consumer experienced digestive discomfort, and Hartford Bakery is probing its packaging changeover process to prevent future errors.
