  • His death on May 25 at a Virginia nursing home ended the direct family link to the 10th president’s 1841–45 administration.
  • Born in 1928 when his father was 75, he exemplified two generations of late parenthood spanning from John Tyler’s era to the 21st century.
  • He co-founded industrial water treatment firm ChemTreat in 1968, building it into a leading provider for major corporations.
  • In 1975, he bought and restored Sherwood Forest Plantation and financed the preservation of Fort Pocahontas in 1996.
