Overview

  • The Harlem cluster has grown to more than 80 confirmed Legionnaires’ disease cases, resulting in three deaths and 24 hospitalizations as of Aug. 8.
  • DOHMH inspectors traced the outbreak to 11 cooling towers and completed urgent antibacterial treatment on all contaminated sites within 72 hours.
  • Health officials say the outbreak is contained and that tap water remains safe, although new cases may surface due to Legionnaires’ two-to-14-day incubation period.
  • A DOHMH spokesperson said current staffing levels did not delay the emergency response; plans are now in place to increase routine tower inspections.
  • State lawmakers have introduced bills requiring more frequent testing, faster remediation deadlines and stiffer fines for cooling tower violations.
