Overview

  • New York City health officials updated the tally to 108 confirmed cases and five deaths, with 14 people currently hospitalized.
  • Legionella was detected in 12 cooling towers across 10 properties, including Harlem Hospital and a CUNY science building, and all towers were drained, cleaned and disinfected by Aug. 15.
  • Cases have been confirmed across five Central Harlem ZIP codes: 10027, 10030, 10035, 10037 and 10039.
  • The Health Department says the outbreak is unrelated to building plumbing, tap water and air conditioners are safe to use, and the disease is not spread person-to-person.
  • Investigators are working to match patient samples to environmental isolates, and city officials have proposed tighter testing, reporting and enforcement rules for cooling towers.
