Overview

  • Jang defeated Kim Moon-soo 50.27% to 49.73%, a margin of 2,367 votes in the PPP runoff held at the national convention.
  • The result combined 80% party-member ballots and 20% a public poll with 46.55% turnout; Jang dominated member votes while Kim led the public survey.
  • In his victory speech, Jang vowed to “bring down the Lee Jae Myung administration” and reiterated a hard-line stance he maintained throughout the race.
  • Both finalists opposed Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment after pro-impeachment contenders were eliminated, as conservative YouTubers and other new-media voices amplified hard-line support.
  • The PPP trails the ruling Democratic Party in approval ratings, 35.5% to 45.8% in a recent Realmeter survey, highlighting hurdles to broaden support before next year’s local elections.
