Hanshin Clears Teruaki Sato to Enter MLB Posting System

The move starts a formal 45-day negotiation window that could be paused by a potential Dec. 1 lockout and will require a release fee if he signs with an MLB club.

Overview

  • Hanshin agreed to Sato’s posting request on Monday, Oct. 19, which makes him eligible to be posted as early as Nov. 1 and starts the process that lets all 30 MLB teams negotiate with him for 45 days.
  • Under the posting rules the signing club will pay Hanshin a tiered release fee based on the contract value and there are no signing restrictions because Sato is over 25.
  • Sato is a 27-year-old left-handed slugger who won the 2026 Central League Triple Crown with a .306 average, 39 home runs and 106 RBIs and he enters the market after consecutive high-power seasons.
  • Teams will weigh his power against translation risks such as a roughly 26–27% strikeout rate and questions about his long-term defensive home after he split time between third base and corner outfield.
  • Multiple clubs including the Yankees, Blue Jays, Mets, Dodgers and Phillies are already linked as suitors, and the looming collective bargaining deadline is pushing teams and Hanshin to accelerate the posting and scouting timetable.
