Hanjin Group's Five Airlines to Ban In-Flight Power Bank Use Starting Monday

The move responds to battery fire risks, reflecting ministry-backed safety measures.

Overview

  • The prohibition takes effect Jan. 26 across Korean Air, Asiana, Jin Air, Air Busan and Air Seoul on domestic and international flights.
  • Using portable batteries to charge phones, tablets, laptops or cameras is barred, and charging the power banks themselves is also prohibited.
  • Passengers may carry power banks in the cabin only within personal reach in a pouch or seat pocket, not in overhead bins.
  • Terminals should be taped or each battery stored separately to prevent short circuits, with existing limits on quantity and capacity still applying.
  • The policy follows a 2025 Air Busan fire; Eastar Jet and Jeju Air have already adopted similar rules, while carriers and the ministry add tools like insulation tape, fireproof bags and temperature‑sensitive stickers and will notify customers across channels.
