Haneda Airport Screener Arrested Over Cash Theft During Security Check

Police say the 21-year-old confessed to the theft, claiming 70–80 similar cases totaling about ¥1.5 million.

Overview

  • Tokyo police arrested Ryu Matsumoto on Sept. 15 after a Sept. 13 incident in which ¥90,000 went missing at Haneda Terminal 1’s domestic security checkpoint.
  • Investigators say the screener removed cash from a tray, put it in his shirt pocket, and hid it inside the cardboard core of a replacement toilet-paper roll in a nearby restroom.
  • The passenger noticed the loss after screening and alerted staff, and CCTV footage showing suspicious movements led police to identify the suspect.
  • Matsumoto, an employee of a security firm contracted to conduct screenings, had been assigned to guide passengers at the lane since April.
  • He was sent to prosecutors the same day as his arrest, and police are verifying his broader confession and stated motive of enjoying the thrill.
