Hamills, Ricki Lake Join 'Big Rock Burning' as Malibu Preview Set for Friday

The short documentary captures residents' accounts of battling January's Palisades/Big Rock wildfire without official help.

Overview

  • Mark and Marilou Hamill and Ricki Lake are executive producers on the short film, alongside Bryan Fogel and Trevor Burgess, with producing partners Julie Parker Benello and James Costa.
  • An exclusive preview screens Aug. 29 at Malibu City Hall in an event hosted by the Malibu Film Society and the City of Malibu.
  • An Oscar-qualifying theatrical run is scheduled for Sept. 12–18 at the Laemmle in Santa Monica.
  • Residents featured in the film say officials deemed Big Rock too dangerous to enter, leaving neighbors to fight flames with hoses and improvised defenses.
  • Director David Goldblum, who lost his home, organized more than 40 Malibu residents to document the destruction and recovery, capturing extensive on-the-ground footage.
