Overview
- Le Palais de Rideaux represents the second most expensive acquisition in the Stiftung Hamburger Kunstsammlungen’ nearly 70-year history.
- The 81 × 116 cm oil on canvas was painted by René Magritte in 1928 and features four overlapping grey forms with cut-out images of a golden pattern, a forest and a cloud-filled sky.
- Museum director Alexander Klar says the work serves as an exceptional counterpart to the Kunsthalle’s existing Magritte painting, L’espoir rapide from 1927.
- Funding for the purchase came from the Heinz H. O. Schröder Stiftung together with contributions from private patrons.
- Visitors can see the painting in the ‘Rendezvous der Träume. Surrealismus und deutsche Romantik’ exhibition through October 12, 2025.
