Hamburg to Vote Oct. 12 on Climate Law Tightening and Basic Income Pilot

Both measures must win a majority and reach 262,609 yes votes to become binding.

Overview

  • Polling stations will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., with postal voting accepted until 6 p.m. on October 12.
  • As of October 2, the city had received 288,167 postal voting documents, equal to nearly 22% of eligible voters.
  • The climate proposal seeks to strengthen Hamburg’s existing climate protection law.
  • The second proposal would launch a pilot program for an unconditional basic income in the city.
  • Since 1996 Hamburg has held seven referendums, five have passed, and today such decisions are binding on the Senat and parliament.
