Hamburg Sets May 31 Referendum on Olympic Bid After Unanimous Parliamentary Approval

The city allocated about €7.2 million for the vote, with the question asking whether the DOSB should apply with Hamburg for the 2036, 2040 or 2044 Games.

Overview

  • Voters will answer a yes-or-no question on whether the German Olympic Sports Confederation should submit a joint bid with Hamburg for future Olympic and Paralympic Games.
  • Mayor Peter Tschentscher said he expects a majority in favor and highlighted lessons from Paris as the city hosts Paris’s vice mayor for sport, Pierre Rabadan.
  • Rabadan described Paris 2024 as a success and offered to share experience with Hamburg, citing river swimming in the Seine as a legacy example.
  • Opposition group NOlympia released a brochure against hosting and will seek 10,000 signatures from late January to include its arguments in official referendum materials.
  • Munich has already voted to pursue a bid, North Rhine–Westphalia plans a late April vote, Berlin currently plans none, and the DOSB aims to select a national candidate in the autumn.
