Hamburg Heat Hub Delayed Six Months, Pushing Wedel Coal Exit to Late 2026

Rework on tiny pipe installations is blamed for the delay, adding €74 million in costs.

Overview

  • Commissioning of the Energiepark Hafen’s gas-and-steam unit is now planned for autumn 2026, according to Hamburger Energiewerke and the environment authority.
  • The coal-fired Wedel heating plant will remain online until the end of 2026 instead of April 2026 to secure district heat supply.
  • Construction is about 85% complete, and the operator is adding roughly 100 fitters and more shifts, bringing on-site staffing to about 950.
  • The general contractor notified the delay tied to extensive extra welding on small pipelines, with responsibility for the €74 million in additional costs still under review.
  • The project is designed to supply around 180,000 dwellings using multiple heat sources, with a KWK unit of roughly 290 MW thermal and 180 MW electrical and a 7.6 km tunnel to the existing network.
