Hamburg Court Jails Sanctions-Violating Supplier, Convicts Four in Russia Export Case

The verdict signals Germany's drive to clamp down on EU export-control evasion via third-country routes.

Overview

  • The Hamburg regional court found five defendants guilty of breaching EU Russia sanctions, imposing sentences from six months on probation to four and a half years in prison.
  • The 46-year-old main defendant was convicted of shipping electronic components worth more than €850,000 to Russia from November 2022 to February 2024 and received a 4.5-year term.
  • Co-defendants received shorter penalties, including nearly three years for a 44-year-old Russian citizen, three years for another 46-year-old German, and suspended sentences for a 38-year-old German and a 55-year-old German-Russian.
  • Deliveries and related payments were largely routed through Hong Kong to Russian recipients, and the goods included circuits, connectors, amplifiers and laboratory centrifuges.
  • The court ordered the confiscation of more than €900,000 in criminal proceeds, and the judgments are not yet final and may be appealed.
