Hamburg Airport Profit Climbs as Passenger Numbers Flatline

Management is pivoting to self-funded upgrades to offset weak domestic demand.

Overview

  • The airport reported a €30.1 million profit for 2025, with 14.8 million passengers, unchanged from 2024 and below the 2019 peak of 17.3 million.
  • Leaders set out about €70 million of spending this year, plus a baggage system overhaul of roughly €90 million by 2029 and a power-supply upgrade of €38 million by 2028.
  • Chief executive Christian Kunsch blamed slow inner‑German traffic on policy choices and high state fees, adding that airlines have trimmed German routes to focus on fuller planes.
  • The operator said capacity cuts by Ryanair were replaced by new EasyJet and Wizz Air routes, and Hamburg now serves about 120 direct destinations with a Europe‑wide ranking of 21st for flight connections.
  • Kunsch said Gulf tensions have not disrupted jet‑fuel supplies and he expects only slight passenger growth this year as the airport upgrades bathrooms, seating areas, and terminal parking.
