Overview
- Hamas announced on Monday that it has dissolved the emergency civilian committee that ran Gaza and that Mohammed al-Farra has formally stepped down from that post.
- The move is meant to clear the way for the technocratic National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, led by Ali Shaath, to assume civil responsibilities.
- The NCAG was created by the Board of Peace under President Donald Trump but its members have not been allowed to take up residence in Gaza because Israel objects to their entry.
- Hamas said public employees will continue to provide services and are ready to work under the NCAG, yet the group’s military wing remains intact and it has not agreed to disarm, a central Israeli demand.
- Egyptian and other mediators have proposed compromises such as depositing weapons with a third party, but reconstruction, aid flows and border openings remain conditional on verified demilitarization and access arrangements.
