Halunder.ai Launches Online Translator to Revive Endangered Helgoländer Friesisch

Backed by Stiftung Lange Anna, the tool uses a model trained on more than a million words of authentic material to reconnect future generations with their ancestral tongue.

Overview

  • The AI model was built on over one million words—including 40,000 unique words and 130,000 sentence pairs—sourced from six decades of Halunder recordings and texts vetted by native speakers.
  • Available now, the privacy-compliant, user-friendly translator converts German and other inputs into Helgoländer Friesisch through a web interface.
  • With fewer than 100 active speakers—most of whom are elderly—the dialect faces critical endangerment that prompted the digital preservation effort.
  • Next phases include a dedicated learning platform for schools and a spoken-variant module to capture the dialect’s audio characteristics.
  • Stiftung Lange Anna aims to use the Halunder.ai blueprint to safeguard Helgoland’s cultural heritage and inspire similar efforts for other threatened languages.
