Halle's Elephant Family to Move to Tierpark Berlin in 2026

The transfer follows a planned 2026–2029 rebuild in Halle that leaves inadequate stall space for a growing herd.

Overview

  • Zoo officials confirmed the relocation of matriarch Pori, her daughter Tana, and young elephants Tamika, Elani and Simon, with Tierpark targeting an early-summer 2026 arrival.
  • Berlin’s rebuilt enclosure spans about 20,000 square meters with capacity for 21 elephants and a budget around €60 million, described by the Tierpark as among Europe’s most modern.
  • The facility is designed to keep natural mother–daughter family groups together and to support future breeding under a welfare-focused model.
  • Interior work at the new elephant house will continue for several months after the herd moves in, according to the Tierpark.
  • Halle will clear its elephant area by spring 2026 to start a comprehensive rebuild running through 2029, and the move was coordinated with the European Endangered Species Programme.
