Groat was a 14-year MLB veteran who helped the Pirates win the 1960 World Series.
Groat was a five-time MLB All-Star and the 1960 NL MVP when he led the majors in hitting.
Groat was a two-time basketball All-American at Duke University and played briefly in the NBA.
Groat was known for being a warm and welcoming presence who always had a story to share.
Groat played his first nine MLB seasons with the Pirates and also played for the Cardinals, Phillies and Giants.
