Overview
- Two synagogues—Shaar Shalom and Beth Israel—and a nearby Chabad-associated building in central Halifax were defaced with antisemitic messages, including a swastika and the phrase “Jews did 9/11.”
- Halifax Regional Police are investigating the incidents as hate crimes, released a suspect photo, and said a dedicated investigator is reviewing video and other evidence.
- Chief Don MacLean said officers responded to six incidents across the area, including three on nearby sidewalks, and pledged charges once those responsible are identified.
- Rabbi Yakov Kerzner said the vandalism at Beth Israel is believed to have occurred Saturday night while congregants were inside for services; the graffiti has since been removed.
- Nova Scotia’s premier, Halifax’s mayor, and Jewish organizations condemned the attacks, which came days after protests over Israel’s Davis Cup participation led to a closed-door match for security reasons.
