Half of Indians Tested Show Abnormal Blood Sugar, PharmEasy Analysis Warns

Regional WHO data show only one in three adults with diabetes receives treatment, highlighting the need for earlier screening and prevention.

Overview

  • The report draws on more than 4 million diagnostic results and 19 million medicine orders gathered across 29 states and union territories from January 2021 to September 2025.
  • Nearly one in three HbA1c tests fell in the diabetic range and one in four indicated prediabetes, so over half of those tested had irregular glucose levels.
  • Elevated readings were detected even under age 30, and prevalence peaked after 60 when about eight in ten tested in the diabetic or prediabetic ranges.
  • Among those with high sugar, comorbidities were common: roughly one in four had thyroid abnormalities, one in three had liver dysfunction, nearly half had kidney impairment, and about 90% had abnormal lipid profiles.
  • Rates were higher in men than women (about 52% vs 45%) and in southern/coastal states such as Puducherry, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Goa compared with Himachal Pradesh, while diabetes drugs rose to 34% of platform orders in 2024 and 22% of retested users normalized within six months.
