Overview

  • Seudah hamafsekes on Erev Shabbos Chazon is elevated, allowing meat and wine in a “royal feast,” and must end before shkiah at 8:09 pm.
  • After the 1:01 pm chatzos deadline, all Torah study shifts to mourning-appropriate texts, with daily Chitas and Rambam reviewed beforehand.
  • Eating, drinking and full hand washing are prohibited from sunset, and congregants may not bring non-leather footwear or Kinos into shul on Shabbos.
  • Time-release fasting aids such as “Tzom Kal” pills are sanctioned on Shabbos, although pre-mixing them into food is preferred.
  • Motzei Shabbos havdalah begins with Hamavdil in Shabbos clothes before changing shoes, and on Sunday night a wine-only ceremony is held without besamim or a ner.
