HAL Poised to Deliver Two Tejas Mk-1A Jets by Late September, Defence Secretary Says

The government will finalize the new 97-aircraft order only after HAL hands over two fully integrated fighters.

Overview

  • R. K. Singh said the first pair is expected with weapons integration by the end of September 2025.
  • Ten Mk-1A airframes are ready and two engines have been received so far, according to the Defence Secretary.
  • The 2021 contract for 83 Mk-1A jets worth ₹48,000 crore has seen no inductions to date due to GE Aerospace engine supply delays.
  • A follow-on procurement of 97 Tejas fighters estimated at about ₹67,000 crore has government approval, pending the initial handovers.
  • About 38 Tejas aircraft are in IAF service with roughly 80 more in production, and the Mk-1A is intended to replace MiG-21s as the IAF manages a 31-squadron fleet against a sanctioned 42.
