HAL and Safran Sign Contract to Co‑Develop Aravalli Helicopter Engine

The deal moves India from licensed production to co‑development by transferring core engine design skills to local industry.

Overview

  • The final contract was signed on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, by HAL and Safran representatives under their 50:50 joint venture SAFHAL with HAL chairman Ravi K and Safran CEO Cédric Goubet in attendance.
  • The engine, named Aravalli, is a new‑generation turboshaft in the 3,500–4,000 shaft horsepower class built to power HAL’s 13‑tonne Indian Multi‑Role Helicopter (IMRH) and its naval Deck‑Based Multi‑Role Helicopter (DBMRH).
  • SAFHAL will manufacture Aravalli at Tumakuru, Karnataka, and the contract covers design, development, production, supply and lifecycle support for the engine.
  • HAL says technical design and development is targeted for completion around 2032–33 while programme progression for the IMRH and DBMRH still requires formal defence clearances such as Acceptance of Necessity and Cabinet Committee on Security approvals.
  • Officials say the programme aims to build indigenous engine know‑how, create local MRO and supply‑chain jobs, and open civil and export markets for medium‑lift helicopters if the engine and platforms are certified and adopted.
