Markenzy Lapointe, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, is overseeing the prosecution of Ryan Routh, accused of attempting to assassinate Donald Trump.
Lapointe, a Haitian immigrant and Gulf War veteran, was nominated by President Biden and confirmed by the Senate in December 2022.
The assassination attempt occurred at Trump's West Palm Beach golf course, where a Secret Service agent spotted Routh with a gun in the bushes.
Trump and his running mate JD Vance have recently spread false claims about Haitian immigrants, leading to threats and evacuations in Springfield, Ohio.
Routh faces charges of possession of a firearm as a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.
